Money

The unit of Czech currency is the Czech Crown (CKR). Notes come in 5 000, 2 000, 1 000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 crown sizes, coins in 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1 crown sizes. Exchange rate is recently about USD 1 = CKR 36. Check out the other exchange rates daily at http://www.cnb.cz/gg/e/cnb99.htm.

Banks and Exchange Offices

Avoid black market exchange. It is common to get fleeced with discontinued crown notes or worthless Polish, Bulgarian or Yugoslav notes. Click the picture on the right and check out how the Czech notes look. Remember, using a bank or regular exchange office service is always safe.

The main foreign exchange banks and offices are located in the center of Prague at or near Wenceslas Square. They are open usually from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays and on Saturdays morning; closed on Sundays:

  • American Express, Wenceslas Square 56
  • Ceska Obchodni Banka, Na prikope 14
  • Komercni Banka, Na prikope 28
  • Thomas Cook, Wenceslas Square 47
  • Vseobecna uverova banka, Celetna 31
  • Zivnostenska banka, Na prikope 20
  • Non stop exchange counters are located at the big hotels and there are also a lot of smaller exchange offices in Prague open 7 days a week.

Credit Cards

There are about 900 cash machines for Cirrus, Maestro, Mastercard, Eurocard and over 400 for VISA in the Czech Republic. There are also some 600 other cash machines of Ceska Sporitelna, usually off-line and only for Czech cards. Some of them are on-line and good for your VISA.

Lost or Stolen Credit Cards

If your cheques or credit cards are lost or stolen, the best way to freeze the accounts is to call your home office. Be careful and write down the phone number to your bank and your credit card number before leaving your home.

You can also try to call credit company in Prague:

  • American Express, phone 24194400
  • Visa, phone 24125353 or call collect to the USA 410-581 3836
  • Dinners Club, phone 6731448
  • Eurocard/Mastercard, phone 24423135

American Express and Thomas Cook branch offices can also help you. Zivnostenska banka may let you draw emergency cash on a lost card if you have your account number and passport. You can also get emergency money from home through Western Union at the office Sport Turist at Narodni 33.
